In our spring content series, we’ve explored your cat’s hydration habits. Now, we turn to address what’s happening between your cat’s ears. At Petlibro, we believe that a pet’s mental health is just as vital as their physical health. A bored pet often means a stressed pet. That’s why proactive pet care isn’t only about smarter feeding and hydration—it’s building the optimal habits that keep their minds sharp and engaged.
While much of the mainstream conversation around active play focuses on mental enrichment for dogs, our feline companions have unique sensory needs that require a specialized approach. By layering these manageable daily shifts into your routine, you can support your cat’s overall health and long-term vitality.
1. Refresh the Feel Cats process the world through their paws and cheeks. Over time, the same familiar surfaces become "invisible" to them. Introducing mental enrichment for cats starts with changing their tactile environment.
Cardboard & Scratchers: Introduce fresh corrugated cardboard or vertical scratchers. This provides new resistance that stimulates their nervous system. Some cats prefer horizontal versus vertical scratchers. Others prefer curved or “S-shaped scratchers. It is important to offer a scratching surface that allows the cat to fully stretch out the length of their body.
Texture Variety: Rotating materials in their favorite lounging spots—from sisal to soft felt—keeps their daily environment exciting rather than predictable.
2. Explore New Scents A cat’s sense of smell is roughly 14 times stronger than a human's. Refreshing their "scent library" is a powerful form of enrichment that triggers natural curiosity.
Beyond Catnip: Introduce silver vine or valerian root. These offer different compounds that can trigger playfulness even in cats that don't react to standard catnip. Make sure the product that you use is cat friendly.
Scent Rotation: Regularly changing the scents available in your home ensures their environment remains a mentally stimulating investigative space. Safe scents they are not likely to normally encounter, such as olive juice, can add novelty to your cat’s world.
3. Experiencing New Heights - cats feel safest and more in control when they can access elevated perches, etc.
By committing to these simple sensory shifts, you are building the foundation your cat needs for a happy, healthy spring.
“It helps to remember that cats would naturally roam several acres given the opportunity. It’s up to us that bring a world of experiences into their indoor life.” Maggie Placer, DVM, CFV, EveryCat Veterinary Science Programs Manager.
