Switching litter boxes can be a big change for cats. Here are some tips that have helped cat parents during this transition:
1. Keep the old litter box available for a while.
Let your cats have both the old box and the Luma present — that way, they never feel like they’re losing their “safe” option. Removing the old box too early can cause stress and make them avoid both.
2. Use familiar litter — and even a bit of old litter.
Try filling the Luma with the same type of litter your cats are used to. You can even scoop a bit of used litter from the old box into the Luma to transfer familiar scents. That makes the new box feel more recognizable and comforting.
3. Introduce the Luma gently — keep it “off” at first.
When you first set up the Luma, consider leaving automatic functions off (no cleaning cycle or lights) so the cats can simply sniff around and investigate without being startled. Once they accept it, you can start enabling the features.

4. Don’t move it — keep location consistent.
Place the Luma where the old litter box was, or somewhere in the same area. Cats often dislike big changes in their litter setup; keeping things familiar reduces anxiety.
5. Use positive reinforcement.
Praise your cats or give them a treat when they approach or use the Luma — this builds positive associations. Don’t punish or scold them if they avoid it. Gentle encouragement works much better than pressure.
6. Be patient.
Some cats adjust quickly; others need days or even weeks. Give them time, and avoid removing the old box immediately. Changes in litter habits can be stressful for cats, and a gradual transition tends to work best.
